The Municipality of Benton Harbor in the State of Michigan

In Grand Rapids, Michigan, a Benton Harbor man has been found guilty by a jury on multiple charges stemming from a gun and drug investigation. Earl Austin IV, aged 22, has been convicted of various offenses including conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, distribution of methamphetamine, possession and transfer of a machine gun, felon in possession of a firearm, and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The charges were brought forth by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan against 11 defendants, including Austin, on December 15, 2022. Among the charges were the sale of “switches,” which are devices converting semi-automatic pistols into fully automatic machine guns.

Regarding the investigation, thirteen individuals have already been sentenced, with others awaiting their sentencing. The lengths of the sentences vary, with some individuals receiving months and others receiving years. Sentencing dates have been set for those awaiting sentencing.

Meanwhile, Governor Gretchen Whitmer sent a video message to kick off the 2024 Michigan Black Summit in Benton Harbor. The summit, themed “Piecing the Puzzle Back Together,” aims to foster unity and interconnectedness within the community. Whitmer emphasized her commitment to the theme and expressed hope for an enriching experience for all attendees. The summit, organized by Neighbors Organizing Against Racism, features Dr. Ken Harris as the keynote speaker and includes entertainment from Howard Hewitt and 90s R&B group Public Announcement during Saturday’s gala. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is also in attendance.
